A notable feature of the agricultural policy of the South African Sugar Industry is that much of our plantation practice still derives from the arbitrary ordinance of tradition or custom, casual observation, and so-called experience. Sugar cane cultivation is an occupation requiring, for its success, the utmost precision both in conception and performance; and further that precision necessitates accurate and comprehensive observation of all relativ~ factors, or values, followed by a carefully dedesigned plan of action for their most Erofitable exploitation.
